From Quicksand to Solid Ground: Building a Foundation to Support Quality Teaching Across the United States

The Transforming Teaching Project at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education has released a white paper describing a policy vision for teaching. From Quicksand to Solid Ground: Building a Foundation to Support Quality Teaching Across the United States has a strong focus on the importance of systemic alignment and coherence and was developed collaboratively with a group of stakeholders, including two of NCTAF’s (National Commission on Teaching and America's Future) Commissioners. This white paper poses challenges around critical questions including teacher preparation, clinical preparation, and adult learning. “We applaud Jal Mehta and the team at Harvard for delivering a thought-provoking, well-researched report. The findings add a fresh new perspective to the broader education policy discourse on preparing and supporting teachers,” said Melinda George, president of NCTAF. “We look forward to working collaboratively with them to address the policy challenges to support great teaching and deeper learning.”
