School Leaders See Technology as Key to Future Student Learning
Administrators surveyed by IESD and Time to Know believe future classrooms need digital content and 1:1 computing.
The majority of respondents in a recent survey of school administrators believe 1:1 technology is an important component of education in the future. The survey, conducted by Interactive Educational Systems Design (IESD) and funded by curriculum provider Time to Know, involved more than 300 district superintendents, assistant superintendents and school principals from districts with 2,500 students or more.
More specifically, when asked what education should be like in the future:
- 80 percent of respondents said they think the ideal classroom would involve 1:1 computer access, a comprehensive digital curriculum, an interactive whiteboard and some student materials available in print form.
- Less than 5 percent think it would be preferable for most materials to remain in print format with some practice and homework being completed on the computer.
- 84 percent of leaders said 21st century skills, including critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to think creatively, should be a high priority in future classrooms.
In addition, 69 percent of leaders cited budget constraints as a top concern and 58 percent cited academic achievement challenges related to student performance and learning as a top concern in planning future classrooms.
