Professional Development Moves Online in Texas

A new eLearning platform supports professional learning communities statewide.

As the 2009-2010 school year winds down, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is preparing to begin offering professional development online through an innovative new interactive learning environment. Project Share, a partnership between TEA, Epsilen, and The New York Times Knowledge Network, was announced in November, 2009. It utilizes a single online platform to deliver a suite of tools that allow teachers across the state to collaborate, share, and participate in professional learning communities tailored to their own needs.

"In addition to the training that will take place in face-to-face settings, this year's professional development will offer a new and innovative approach," writes Anita Givens, TEA's Associate Commissioner for Standards and Programs. "Participants will be able to complete online training modules through the state's digital platform. … This access will be provided at no cost to districts and open-enrollment charter schools."

Beginning in the summer of 2010 and continuing into the 2010-11 school year, these online training opportunites will be coordinated by the state's Education Service Centers (ESCs). A series of webinars, presentations, and training opportunities will be provided to acquaint educators and other stakeholders with the various components of the program.

Beyond the initial launch, Project Share will also pilot the use of ePortfolios that allow teachers to assess students using methods other than pencil/paper assessments by giving students the opportunity to showcase work representing a wider range of their capabilities.
