Equal Access, Engagement Lead to Alabama Laptop Success
The superintendent of the Cullman City Schools in Alabama sees numerous improvements since starting a one-to-one laptop program three years ago. According to superintendent Jan Harris, SAT 10 and ADAW writing grades are on the rise, attendance has improved by 2 percent and discipline infractions have decreased.
Harris attributes all improvement to students’ engagement. “They want to be at school,” she says, “and they’re not distracted.”
“Heck yeah, I’m excited,”
said freshman Greg Booker about the new, light-weight HP laptops that were being issued to the entire Cullman High School freshman class. The enthusiasm of freshman receiving their laptops prompted a local news update on the initiative, which is funded by various grants the district has received.
“I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this student-centered system,” says Harris. “I’m especially proud all of our students here have equal access to technology.”
