Cleveland, Ohio, Middle School Launches Laptop Program

Monticello Middle School is piloting a laptop program that is scheduled to expand to all middle and high school classes in the district by 2012.

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District in Cleveland, Ohio, launched its One to One Teaching and Learning Initiative in October with a student/parent training event. Laptops were distributed first to eighth-grade students at Monticello Middle School, along with a presentation about student and family responsibilities, Internet safety and laptop safety and care. Sixth and seventh graders were scheduled to receive their laptops several weeks later.
Monticello is serving as the initiative's pilot site this year. By the year 2012, the district plans for all middle and high school students to learn in a wireless digital environment. The program's goals are to improve creativity among students, to enhance the ways in which they are engaged in the classroom and to increase equity in the accessibility of technology for all students.
