Big Spring Laptops Back -- With a New Filter
Students in the west Texas town of Big Spring had their laptop privileges revoked when pornography and other suggestive materials were found on the notebooks. "We tried to treat them as adults in some regards, and not all the kids could behave in that manner," says BSISD Technology Consultant Thomas Owen.
The school returned the laptops with a different filter and parent education. "Penalizing them and taking the laptop away would be like taking a textbook from a student," says Big Spring Principal Bruce Wilson.
Parents agree that shutting down the program, which has helped students with studying and school projects, is not the solution. However, they are opening their eyes to the responsibilities that go along with such a program. "I guess I'll be looking at my sons laptop now!” one parent remarks.
