All-Girls Prep School Innovates with Help from $2 Million Donation
Marymount High School, a Catholic College preparatory school for girls in Los Angeles, CA, recently received $2 million from the founder of Abraxis BioScience, Inc, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shion, and his wife, Michele B. Chan. The donation will be used in part to support a one-to-one laptop program – the first of its kind for an all-girls independent high school in California. In addition to purchasing laptops, the money will be used to build a 21st Century learning environment that provides enhanced opportunities for collaborative learning and encourages "young women to be socially and environmentally responsible leaders."
Quite appropriately, the school will be adding SKYShades Solarbrellas (solar-collecting umbrellas that allow users to recharge devices wirelessly) to the campus to provide power for the laptops when they are being used outside in the California sun. The donation will also support collaborative projects with UCLA's Anderson school and scholarships for two students whose families would otherwise not have been able to afford a Marymount education.
