Alabama School Speeds Up Laptop Program

With teachers enthusiastic about an existing laptop pilot and grant funding becoming available, the Cullman, Alabama, School Board approves a faster phase-in to grades 11 and 12.

Cullman High School has, by now, issued a laptop to almost every ninth through twelfth grader after the school board approved the final phase of the district’s laptop initiative, putting the eleventh and twelfth grade laptop phase one year ahead of schedule.

Cullman High School Principal Sheila Phillips is glad to see the project finally coming to full fruition. “This will cover the remainder of our student body, and we are all very excited,” she said. “We think it will benefit all of our students. We have put a lot of preparation and training into this.”

The lease agreement approved by the board for the student laptops totals approximately $90,000, which Chief Financial Officer Russell Raney said is still below budget. Grants paid for much of the project, and the school portion is still on budget.
