High School Students in York, PA Hope to Get New Laptops

Ten years in the making, the district's 1:1 program is close to fruition.

In an effort to prepare their students for the jobs of the future, the Central York School District in Pennsylvania is going through the final stages of leasing 1,900 Apple laptop computers for a brand new one-to-one program. The hope is to personalize instruction, help students acquire the skills they need, and give them the opportunity to use engaging technology to support their learning.

If the program is approved by the school board, students in grades 9 through 12 will all be issued laptops. Although they will not own the computers, after paying a $50 insurance fee they will be able to take them home for 24/7 use.

The program will cost $475,000 a year over a four-year period. The district has been putting money aside each year for the past ten years to prepare for this challenge.
