One-to-One Begins for Rural Canadians

Battle River Regional is one of 20 school divisions in Alberta that are taking part in the 1-1 Mobile Computing Program.

The Camrose Canadian of Camrose, Alberta reports that local schools are launching a One to One pilot. The pilot, for rural students of the Battle River Regional Division, is offered by Alberta Education with funding separate from school budgets.

20 school divisions in Alberta are taking part in the 1-1 Mobile Computing Program, with each school division setting their own plans. “Some are focusing on young students or junior high. We are focusing on high school students,” said Diane Hutchinson, Battle River Regional Division.

Kristin Thesen, staff writer, explains,

Educators have taken several courses throughout the summer preparing for the program, learning the skills and methods used in proper Internet research skills in order to decipher fact from fiction. To learn more about adapting their teaching techniques to incorporate technology, there will be additional consultation with staff about the curriculum and about technology during the fall.

The goal of the program is to enhance computer literacy and technical skills such as research, assessment writing, and presentations. The computers will be used particularly in social studies and English and for summer videoconferencing.
