Auburn, Alabama

Auburn City Schools, recently selected a Smart Showcase District, is having major success with a one-to-one program involving schools across the district. You will hear from the following presenters from Auburn City Schools:

Debbie B. Rice
Director of Technology

Debbie Rice

Debbie Rice provides the vision and leadership behind the successful plan for integration, utilization, evaluation and expansion of educational technology in all academic disciplines for the Auburn City Schools – which was selected in September, 2007, as a Smart Showcase District. Currently, she is leading an aggressive one-to-one roll-out across the district to include extremely well articulated scale and sustainability components. Rice supported the development of the technology plan for the Auburn Early Education Center, an innovative, technology-rich kindergarten school, that was awarded the Intel / Scholastic School of Distinction Award. She serves on a variety of boards and committees at the local and state level and has presented at various state and national conferences including NECC, CoSN, Intel’s 2006 Visionary Conference and Intel’s 2006 Atlanta CoDIF and 2007 ePIC conferences. She is currently enrolled in the Masters Program at Auburn University seeking her degree in Administration and Supervision of Curriculum.

Dennis Veronese
Assistant Superintendent of Business and Financial Services

Dennis Veronese

In his role as assistant superintendent of business and financial services at Auburn City Schools, Dennis Veronese guides the districts budget with an eye toward academic innovation and technology integration. With more than 14 years experience in K-12 public education finance at the state and local, and degrees in both accounting and educational leadership, he is responsible for providing policy and oversight of the financial operations for the school district.    He serves on a variety of boards and committees at the state and local level. 

Jason D. Wright
Principal, Auburn Jr. High School

Jason Wright

Jason has been the principal at Auburn Junior High School (8 th and 9 th grades since July 2003. Prior to that he served as an assistant principal, teacher, and coach with stops at Auburn High School, Smiths Station High School, and Cullman High School, dating back to 1993. He will complete his Ed.D. in educational leadership in May 2008 from Valdosta State University. He has presented on a variety of topics at the state and national levels for organizations including the Alabama Department of Education, Alabama Educator Technology Conference, Florida League of Middle Schools, and the National Positive Behavior Support Conference.

Irving Independent School District
Irving, Texas

Irving ISD, a pioneer in the implementation of one-to-one laptop learning, places wireless laptops in the hands of all its high school students. Speakers from Irving ISD:

Dr. Alice E. Owen
Executive Director of Technology

Alice Owen

Alice Owen has experience as a principal, staff development director, technology director, and statewide executive director of a computer education association. She currently oversees a district-wide implementation of over 10,000 laptops provided to all high school students and teachers in Irving ISD. She recently hosted two national symposiums for districts implementing laptop programs in one-to-one settings. Dr. Owen is a member of a number of state and national associations and chairs the state chapter of CoSN, the Texas K-12 CTO Council. She has also worked with CoSN staff and others to develop a Leadership Symposium around the topic of one-to-one computing and with ISTE to form a new special-interest group about one-to-one computing. She has been on numerous state and national committees to develop standards for the educational technology community and has developed curriculum and served as master trainer for a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant project that trained Texas superintendents and principals in the use of laptops and leadership. As staff development director, she led her district to be recognized nationally by the US Department of Education as a Model Staff Development Program.

Sam Farsaii
Director of Instructional Technology

Alice Owen

An eight year veteran teacher of mathematics and computer science at the High School for Engineering Professions in Houston ISD, Sam Farsaii then moved into the position of technology specialist for Houston ISD, overseeing technology training and implementation of computer labs in Houston's 68 Title I schools. Within three years he was promoted to the position of senior technology trainer and soon supervised technology training for the district. As technology integration in instruction was taking stronger roots in HISD, he initiated several watershed projects, including a Lego-Robotics project that was soon expanded to a statewide student competition, and the incorporation of laptops into algebra classrooms across the district. Since 2000, Farsaii has been the director of instructional technology in Irving ISD, where the vision to bring technology seamlessly to all students is being realized. Irving ISD is a pioneer in technology integration with more than 10,000 laptops currently in students' hands.
